An Introduction

by Deacon Joe Alvarez

All over the world, people have grown in faith through the Charismatic Renewal. It's been described as a catalyst of new faith. For some, it has been their first encounter with the person of Jesus Christ. For others, it has been the means of renewing a weak or ineffective faith. Because of this, we can justifiably say that a Charismatic experience is often a way of growing in faith, of moving from one level of faith to another.

In my 23 years as a Charismatic, I have gone through three different stages of faith: Believing Faith, Trusting Faith, and Expectant Faith. I believe that to be a Christian at all means we have to enter into the first stage. Some have a hard time getting to the second, and a lot of people never make it to the third at all. But God is looking for men and women of Faith. People who will accept His Word, believe in His son, and be committed to His church. He doesn't want His children to be passive and resigned. He expects us to be enthusiastic and eager, longing to know Him more, and believing that He wants to work in us and through us. This is the kind of Faith He is looking for. Jesus puts it in four simple words. "Have Faith in God." [Mark 11:22]

December twelfth of this year will mark twenty years that I have served my Lord and His Church as an ordained Permanent Deacon and twenty-two years of service in the Charismatic Renewal. Praise the Lord! Now, I will be serving as the Bishop's Liaison for this Diocese of San Jose.

May God bless you and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

In Christ Jesus;
Joe V. Alvarez
