Geese

Fr. Dave Schwartz

During the Leader's Meeting on February 24th, we spoke of the many upcoming events to which all are invited. You've noticed, I'm sure, that we get much more out of an experience when we help plan and put on the events we attend. We're not surprised by this truth. We know well Luke 6:38:

"Give, and it shall be given to you. Good measure pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be poured into the fold of your garment. For the measure you measure with will be measured back to you."

The following meditation on Geese highlights this and other benefits that are gained when lots of folks pitch in to help accomplish the considerable work that goes into making our events an enjoyable and enriching experience for all.

Geese

When you see geese flying in `V' formation, heading south for the winter or north for the summer, consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way:

As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in formation, working together, the whole flock adds at least 70% greater range than if each bird flew on its own.

People who share a common goal and work together to accomplish that goal achieve better results than those who work alone.

If a goose falls out of formation it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone. It wisely gets back into formation and continues to work with the others.

We wisely and generously spend our time and energy helping one another accomplish the work that must be done to ensure the success of the events that we participate in.

When the lead goose gets tired it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point.

We wisely take our turn helping with the most demanding jobs.

When a goose gets sick and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with it and follow it down to lend help and protection. They help the infirm goose until it dies or can resume flying.
