The Gifts of the Spirit

A Meditation

"And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; yea, and on my menservants and my maidservants in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy." [Acts 2:17-18]

The Gifts of the Spirit are for the common good, and are given as needed.

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. [wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and interpretation of tongues] All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. (1 Cor 12:7,10-11)

If you turn to Jesus, the Gift of the Spirit will be available to you.

And Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him." [Acts 2:38-39]

However, the key to spiritual growth is not the gifts, but Love. As we grow in Love, the Gifts will manifest, for they are the product of our love for God and for each other.

Make love your aim, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. [1 Cor 14:1] Hence I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power and love and self-control. [1 Tim 1:6-7]
